I am a Master of Professional Engineering (Electrical & Electronic), Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Electrical) graduate from the University of Newcastle Australia. I have a broad range of speciality skills in the areas of Control System Design, Embedded Systems, FPGA, Wireless Communication, Machine Intelligence & User Interface Design. Such a diverse range of speciality skills drive my passion in the areas of robotics and the Internet of Things.

Take Eric’s undergraduate Honours project on an Augmented Reality Control System for a Surf Life Saving Drone. The system allows a Surf Life Saver to pinpoint the exact GPS coordinate of the distressed swimming using visuals alone. The GPS coordinate is transmitted to a drone, where it will automatically take off and fly to the distressed location in the ocean. A flotation device is delivered to the distressed along with oral instructions directly from the Surf Live Saver.

Extending on the technologies developed by Eric in his Honours Project, Eric developed a Telepresence Control System for a Search & Rescue Tank for his Master’s project. The robot is designed to be used in emergency situations like mine disasters, nuclear or chemical incidents and in unstable buildings after earthquakes. The operator wears a set of Virtually Reality Goggles to see through the eyes of the vehicle, while handheld VR controls make the device’s arms mimic the movement of the driver’s arms. “It translates exact human movements into robotic movements which give the operator the feeling of being in the location of the robot without actually being in harm’s way.”

Post University, while working at SAPHI Eric has extended his skills by undertaking courses with National Instruments about LabVIEW. Eric is accredited in LabVIEW Core 1, 2, 3 & Embedded Control & Monitoring.
